Tossed myself into an LFG by myself this morning and when I finally got into the dungeon, I discovered one of my fellow pugs was a guildie! What are the odds? Has anyone else had this or something similar happen to them?

Also, is there a way I can disable combat sound effects so all I can hear is the voice acting of the bosses? They say such wonderful things sometimes, but the noise of hitting stuff and pew pew tend to drown it all out.

My very first bad random PuG experience.

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
So, I queue up for a random heroic, get into a H PoS with two bosses down. Normally, I don't like going in after bosses have died, but I decided to give it a shot. As soon as I zone in, I mount up and head towards where the other party members are. They didn't clear some of the adds, and I pull one. While I'm running for my life, a mage says "Warlock. Summon me. Now."
????
I told him that I had an add on me, and porting in was just as efficient. Someone else said that the mage didn't want to run in. I told him it was too bad, because I had to run in. Note: I probably would have summoned him, if he'd asked, instead of demanded. We sat around for about 5 minutes, all the while, the mage was making snide remarks about how he'd just sit in Dalaran until the lock decided to summon him. I informed him that he should just have fun sitting there until he decides to be civil about it. Finally, he runs in. More rude remarks ensue. The paladin tank pulls the adds. I start beating down the Flame guy, and pull aggro, soul shatter, then get a damage debuff. The healer lets me die, not even bothering to toss any kind of heal on me.
I say, "Oh, nice heals there." The healer tells me that if I wanted heals, I should have summoned his friend. And that he's not really in the mood to heal
????
A few seconds later, everyone except the tank dies from the damage debuff, because the healer was too busy talking smack to me to notice that his friends were dying, too. I have a good laugh, and the mage tells the tank to kick me. I say fuck it, and leave, because I don't have to deal with rude people.

I know this is just a lot of QQ, but I really just don't understand why people from other servers find that it's alright to be rude to people not from their server. I'd understand if I'd caused them to wipe, or if I put out incredibly low DPS numbers, or just acted like an idiot in general. But I didn't. I simply didn't summon a guy who was rude to me.
The biggest downfall to the random LFG system is the sudden loss of common courtesy, cross-realm.

Timing is everything

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 7:10 PM
So, for me, the instance server I'm in is in a different time zone than my regular server. So in the middle of the run I see that it's 8:30pm, when in *my* time zone it's actually 6:30pm. Fortunately, I didn't panic, but it definitely took a moment to recover from that, and fortunately we were at the end of the instance, rather than the beginning.

Still - I feel it's worth being annoyed about, and so worth complaining about here. Blah, blah, blah. And, yes, I could probably make sure the time on the clock is set to my local time, rather than server time, but that's messed me up in WG in the past, when they've been off by a couple of minutes.

Starfall

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 12:33 PM
I have a question for all you balance druids.

I was on vent the other day with a friend of mine, and he was complaining about a boomkin using starfall in instances that he was tanking, I think because it pulled extra mobs

I said surely it's ok to use it if you glyph it (the glyph cuts the range in half), and he said no, duids should never use starfall in instances. I asked in what circumstances they should use it, since it seems to me that it wouldn't be that effective in pvp as the effect is cancelled if you change forms or get stunned. He said yeah, there and no circumstances in which starfall should be used.

Please tell me he's wrong! He doesn't play a druid so I would take what he says with a grain of salt, but he's usually very knowledgable about pretty much all classes and specs, and spends a lot of time reading up on things.

It seems stupid to me that druids would get a 51 point talent that's completely useless (when I said as much he said yeh, that's what sucks about boomkins). I've not had any trouble with it on my baby druid since I glyphed it, but have a I just been lucky?

Lady Sylvanas

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 2:49 PM

I am having a heck of a time using my red rider on her. I'm standing on the stairs and have taken two shots at her. Only one has gone off and missed her. Any suggestions out there for those who have done this?

Update: Three shots now, and no joy.

Update 2: I sent the BB gun back to Blizz as it was defective.

Update 3:Dear Greatfather Winter,

Sadly, there was no joy in toone town tonight. I returned my Red Rider Rifle to an NPC because it was defective. You may want to shop somewhere else next year because whoever sold you this used poor materials.

Dear PUG Tank,

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 1:42 PM
Dear PUG Tank,

I am an endgame-geared, raid-happy MM hunter. I do not mind waiting for you to build threat. I do not mind misdirecting mobs to you. I do not even mind doing less than optimal DPS so you can hold threat on the kill target. This is specifically directed at you, Mr. Ranting DK Tank From Last Night. I know that you just got to 80 and just got geared for tanking. Your blues and greens give this away. As does the fact that, unbuffed, you have less health than I do. None of these are really problems for me, I don't mind running heroics to help people get geared. What I do mind, however, is pulling threat using auto shot. Please, for the love of all that which is good and righteous, study up on your tanking rotation and spec before trying to tank. When my pet is pulling threat - with growl off, mind you - I get a little concerned. Please don't spout obscenities at me in /party when I pull threat with my first two shots. Sometimes, I crit a little hard. That's just the way my gear goes. And remember, my feign death is on a 25-second cooldown. I use it as often as I can, but sometimes it gets resisted. Other times, well, it's not off cooldown yet. Please toss a taunt or two at the mob beating on me, I am not a warrior wearing plate armor, nor am I a rogue who can lolwut a mob in melee range. This will save you headache and the healer some mana. Which he - or she - is probably desperately using to keep you alive.

Love, Karbon
MM Hunter

P.S. Healers? I know you've got a lot on your plate. I know that you're concerned about keeping the tank alive. But could you please toss a heal at my pet now and again? Mend Pet isn't everything, alas, and it makes me an unhappy hunter to have to resurrect my pet after a fight. You've deprived me of the company of my loyal battle-companion, after all, and that makes me sad.

P.P.S. As a polite reminder to the paladins out there, I would like a blessing of kings or a blessing of might. Not a blessing of wisdom. Especially not a blessing of sanctuary, unless there's four paladins in the group. Thank you.

P.P.P.S. Fellow group members? I know I'm geared. You don't need to tell me things like 'OMG, ur gear is awesome,' or ask me 'were can i get gear liek u?' Please don't make me put on my T4 gear to keep from having to deal with this situation. Check WoWhead. Read up on MMO-Champion. Spend a little time researching and take advantage of those lovely internet resources to learn where you can go to get upgrades. This is especially applicable if you are not a hunter or a paladin tank. I do not know where, for example, the best boomkin gear drops. Therefore, asking me is rather useless and irritates me a little.

P.P.P.P.S. Tanks? I know you're trying your best. So am I. I <3 you for being willing to endure the madness that is the PUG heroic.

Soloing [BB King]. Need help

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 11:28 PM
Gathering a raid to enemy cities is too much a pain, so I decided to solo http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=4436. But there is one big problem: Thrall's room in Orgrimmar is packed with guards. There is no place to resurrect without aggroing over 9000 NPC, and being a a cloth wearer I don't have even 1 second to live before they kill me. And I need at least 1.5 seconds...

Any ideas?

AH Tips from a Former AH Noob

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 2:22 PM
You may recall several days ago that I was excited that I had gotten a new arrow pattern that was making my much in the way of gold. Needless to say this was not something that was easily ignored by every other Gnomish engineer on the server, and they all started undercutting in order to make their own profits. Yet, somehow, I still managed to control the market. Here are tips on how to do so given any market:

1) Have constant presence. Advertise a lot. Offer to craft for discounts. Sell directly in bulk for large discounts (Make sure you still make money!). Make sure you have so many auctions up that your name is ALWAYS there. You want to create an association by reflex with your name and the item(s) you're selling.

2) Make sure your opponents don't know your pricing! On your AH character, find out the name of your competitors and /ignore them. To my knowledge, this prevents them from seeing your auctions, and thus knowing if they've been undercut! In a similar vein, use an alt just to check the market so this same trick can't be used on you.

3) Make sure you get whatever you need to make the items yourself, or at a price much lower than normal. If you can craft at a price where you can make profit while forcing others to take a loss, you've essentially won (Though driving the price higher could help your profits, at the risk of being undercut of course).

4) Undercut smartly. If you're having a market war, don't dedicate your entire stock to the war. Leave some at the higher price, and put a chunk 1s BO price below the competitor's. If you've been dedicated to the market you're in, odds are you'll be able to move the stock you put below theirs, theirs will then be bought, and they'll also be discouraged from trying to undercut you again, thus causing your higher-price stock to sell.

5) Be ready to dedicate a lot of time to checking auctions to see if you've been undercut or if the market has changed.

That's about it. I've managed to get myself the crafted 264 boots in only a few days via obeying these basic principles. Obviously they might not always work, but it's really helped with the profit margin.

Good luck in the AH to you all!

Upcoming Changes in Cataclysm

This is worth your time to read.

Cut for those behind evil firewalls n'stuff. )

Edit: OK, so the pics from the link were posted during Blizzcon. That's nice. If they were posted here or at any number of WoW related info sites independent of Blizzard, I missed them. I'd hate to think I missed them from WoR, WoW Insider, and MMO Champ.

Anyone Have the Pandaren Figure?

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 1:03 PM
I've been debating on whether to use some holiday money on getting the 8" Chen Stormstout Pandaren figure from Blizzard. Anyone have it already or anyone been thinking of buying it too?

Otherwise, I might get both a Shaman and a Druid shirt from J!nx.com and the Pandaren minipet.

Dear PUG DPS,

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 9:11 AM
Dear PUG DPS,

I am a paladin tank. This means that I can effectively hold aggro on multiple targets against things like healing aggro and even most AoE. What I cannot do, unless my gear is significantly higher-level than yours, is hold aggro on a mob with splash threat when you're nuking it full force. Please keep this in mind when you pull threat on the mob I'm not directly hitting with my sword and you start getting beat on by it. I will, of course, do my best to try and get aggro back as I am not generally an asshole. This, however, is not a request for you to keep DPSing the target I just taunted, because this makes it difficult for me to keep threat on mobs the rest of the group is busy focusing DPS on. Remember, your friendly neighborhood paladin tank is working hard to keep you alive, and he would appreciate it if you didn't make it any more difficult for him than it has to be. Also, please remember that the healer can only cast a limited number of spells at a time, so don't make your healer sad by pulling threat and requiring immediate heals. Or he might get angry with you and let you get pounded on by the mobs until you die instead of tossing a heal at you when you need it.

Love, Agathius
Paladin Tank

P.S. The fact that there are three DPSers in a PUG Heroic doesn't mean that you should be attacking three different targets at the same time. /assist Agathius is a wonderful command. Please use it.

P.P.S. Healers, please tell me if you're new/undergeared/inexperienced. I can pull at a rate consistent with the needs of your mana regeneration and healing ability.

P.P.P.S. Healers, if you managed to somehow pull aggro, please TELL ME. Don't just stand there and die. It helps if you let the tank know that he's pulling too fast for you to keep up.

Gah!

This is going to be tough. =(

My own rant about cross realm pugs

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 8:11 AM
I'm a 14/57/0 holy priest. Some words of advice to tanks. If I have to run to keep up with you because you want out of the instance in under 15 minutes you will die. If you don't watch my mana you will die. I have only been an 80 for five days and have one piece of tier 9 gear. I don't know every boss fight. If you don't give me the chance to say that you will die. Every time you die the rest of the group dies. We are a team. You are not running this instance solo. When you pull the first trash 5 seconds after we have zoned in and I haven't had a chance to buff the party and recover mana we will die. Going into a boss fight without your healer at full mana is foolish and we will die. When any or all of the above occur don't bitch at me about your repair bill and how the gold reward for doing a random is lost.  Just because "you're the tank" doesn't make you god. I am not here to be your hand maiden. Don't act like one and I won't act like a bitchy little school girl. I am here to keep the whole party alive not just you.

That said I have ran into some truly wonderful tanks that did keep an eye on my mana and kept a good smooth rhythm through the run that got us out of the instance quick yet kept everybody safe. They were team players who had the sense to say "Rdy?" before every boss fight and were tolerant of other peoples mistakes, whether mine or another person on the team. They let people loot the trash before pulling the next group and said "thx for party" at the end of the run. I ran into one tank yesterday that was so considerate I ended up staying partied with him and we did three instances together.

I know that a lot of this behavior is because the attitude is that these are cross realm and your chances of running into anybody else in that party again are slim. But we're all in this boat together and we all want the gold and badges. Work with me and I will be more than willing to work with you.

Sigh.. first bad cross-server PUG experience

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
I get on my DK on a server I no longer play on.. alliance side (I normally play Horde). I'm leveling Unholy DPS, okay? Okay. If a group needs a tank, I will tank and I haven't had any issues whatsoever with it yet. When I enter an instance, it's generally the very first thing I say and nobody has complained so far.

So I queue for a random BC instance (DK is 64 by the way) and instantly get a group, my role being a tank. I accept the role and get ported in. I'm still in DPS gear and Blood Presence. When I get in, I switch my gear, go for Frost Presence, and prepare to let them know that I'm not actually a tank.. but as I go to activate Frost Presence, I see a hunter's pet run into the first pack of mobs

Alright, fine, I guess I'll try and pick that up. ...except now we've got one guy running to the hunter, one to the mage, one on the hunters pet and the healer and I going, "wtf?". There's only so much I can do.

Anyway, the pull isn't even over and the hunter dies. They type, "oh god". So I say, "try not sending your pet in first, not to mention before we're ready". His reply? "u suck really bad". Meanwhile the rogue is in there going, "am i only girl???" "am i only girl???//".

So I said I'm DPS, I tank if a group needs it because I am CAPABLE.. as are ALL DK's that don't completely blow. He was like, why did you sign up for tank if you aren't a tank?

...........

Then he says, you don't see hunters signing up for tanks

.......................

The healer says, "shut the f*** up (hunter), you were just bitching about people making fun of you for being shitty". He follows with, "lol u mad?" So I figure the next pull will be okay, and it is except for the part where he just sends his pet to the mob nobody else is attacking. Okay, whatever. Pets aren't terribly weak.

Next thing I know he's sending in his pet to the next group of 4. /palm

I vote to kick, and I wait, but nothing happens. (Why can't leaders kick, again? Seems stupid.) Probably lack of votes or something that nothing happened.. someone was his friend I'm sure. But after the hunter did that last pull, I just left (not worth my time) and it ports me out and leaves them with 4 mobs and no tank.

I guess they can't all be good experiences. :\ Just wanted to vent a little.

tankless water heater

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 6:40 PM

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 11:27 PM
